The Centre in brief
Palestine Trauma Centre for Victims’ Welfare (PTC) is considered to be the first of its kind in
Palestine and the Arab world. The PTC was established on January 2007 as a charitable institution
(non-governmental / non-profitable), which aimed mainly to provide psychological, social and
specialized medical services for Palestinians in the Gaza Strip for those who have suffered and
continue to suffer from the occupation and blockade imposed by Israel.
The PTC provides free care services in four key areas: Prevention, Counselling, Rehabilitation and
Therapy.
The PTC is located in Gaza City and opened in April 2007 after an extensive three year study on
the chronic effects of trauma on the Palestinian community in the Gaza Strip had been conducted.
This study found that approximately seven hundred thousand Palestinians (children and adults)
urgently needed psychological, social and medical help. Children were suffering from severe
psychological, social and behavioural disorders as a result of constant exposure to the traumas
produced by the ongoing war, occupation and blockade.
----------
Our Message
The PTC has a community approach to mental health and aims to strengthen the power of each
family to deal with trauma by helping them to develop co-operative ways of behaving and thinking.
If they believe themselves to be active members of society, aware of their collective history and the
cause which unites them, this acts as a form of basic therapy around which they can begin to rebuild
their lives.
The PTC also provides specific therapeutic services for different kinds of trauma. It works within
families and equips them to develop strategies for coping with stress, shock and other on-going
factors that disturb their everyday lives in this region. The PTC combines psychological therapy
with social support to create a protection against future traumas and to help unify a fragmented
society.
----------
Our Vision
The PTC works hard to foster the sense of interdependence within the family and within society. It
offers guidance and support in all areas of normal life, whether educational, psychological,
economic, physical or intellectual. We believe that the collective health of the population can only
be achieved through this holistic approach.
The PTC has conducted scientific studies which conclude that most Palestinians in the Gaza Strip
have been subjected to trauma. 41% of children and their families are suffering from serious
psychological disorders.
To deal with the huge extent of this problem, it has been necessary to work from a centre which was
able to provide rapid professional support and health care followed by programmes of activities to
enable the families to support themselves. It is hoped that this method of operation will spread from
Gaza to the West Bank, and the Palestinian diaspora in Lebanon, Syria and Jordan. Furthermore, the
Centre wishes to expand the number of its units and to establish a specialised clinic for research and
psychiatric care. There is also a project for the development of Psycho-social drama.
---------------
Our Goals
1. To help to alleviate the suffering of Palestinian victims of the occupation in a humane and
professional manner.
2. To support and strengthen community to face the pressures and traumas resulting from the
occupation and the increasing poverty that contributes to social breakdown.
3. To raise awareness in the international worlds about the tragic effects of the continuing
vulnerability of the Palestinian people to traumas produced by war, occupation and blockade.
4. To develop a professional team in psychological and social fields, in addition to psychiatric work.
5. To ensure, through the provision of appropriate care, that children in Palestine are able to enjoy
their childhood.
6. To get the most able graduates in the fields of psychology, sociology and psychiatry and train
them to work for the Centre and similar organisations.
--------------
Major Accomplishments and Activities (2007 - 2008)
Despite being only recently established and despite the conditions in the Gaza Strip being so harsh,
the Centre has become a beacon of hope and has conducted many activities between January 2006
and May 2008. These include:
1. Developing a team of seventy volunteers (doctors, psychiatrists, social workers, nurses and
psychological counsellors) and helping to develop their theoretical and applied skills.
2. Furnishing the Centre and establishing a children's games hall and a computer lab.
3. Establishing the Family’s Psycho-Social Support Programme, which aims to support
children who suffer from mental, social or health disorders and live in marginalized areas in the
Gaza Strip.
4. Running the Rapid Response Programme in times of crisis. This programme aims at rapid
intervention in areas where people are exposed to the destructive activities of the occupation, such
as the demolition of houses, bulldozing of land and the killing or wounding of children.
5. Providing material relief for needy Palestinian families such as Eid gift, a sheep for Al-
Adhha Eid and food baskets.
6. Offering online and free-of-charge treatment for trauma.
The PTC offers psychological help for victims of trauma as an online free-of-charge service. This
aid is provided in cooperation with the Berlin Centre for the Treatment of Victims of Torture, in
which the sufferer can get access to the appropriate treatment for a period of five weeks and under
the supervision of a network of Arab specialists.
7. Participation in conferences and workshops on local and international levels.
The PTC has actively participated in conferences relevant to the objectives of the Centre, such as
the Abu Dhabi Conference in Mental Health (18-22 February 2008), The Istanbul Conference on
Mental Health (30 April – 3 May 2008) and workshops in London on ways to meet the
humanitarian needs of the Palestinian people (12 May 2008).
8. Saving the Children Programme.
This will be one of largest programmes to be implemented by the PTC and its partners once the
necessary funding is available. It aims to bring smiles back to the faces of children and their
families through the provision of counselling, recreational activities (including Drama) and cultural
care services on a collective level. More than 200,000 children are expected to benefit from this
programme, which will include children, their families and schools in the Gaza Strip.

This aims at training a professional and specialized team in psychological, social and medical
fields to care for victims of trauma, as well as providing continuous professional development for
staff at the Centre to keep up-to-date with the latest research and practice.

assess the damage and identify the physical, psychological and social problems created by the
incident, particularly for children.
